How do I know if my company qualifies for product liability insurance coverage?
If you are a manufacturer of handmade products such as lotion, soap, bath salts, perfume, essential oils, candles, jewelry, perfumes, fragrance oils, base oils, waxes, powders, masks and scrubs, you quality for product liability insurance coverage through our program. Candies, cookies and brownies are covered only if they are sold in a set (such as a gift basket) in conjunction with cosmetics that are covered. If they are sold separately from covered cosmetics, they are not covered by this program. Items that are not covered include products such as these: drugs, nutritional supplements, products requiring a prescription, cosmetics designed for internal use, coffee, tea, children’s toys and meat products. What types of products are covered by the product liability insurance?
How do I know if my product is “handmade” for purposes of the insurance?
For purpose of this policy, “handmade” means you either made the product from scratch by hand yourself, someone under your control made the product from scratch by hand, or you purchased the unscented, unflavored and/or uncolored product in bulk and added your own scent, flavor and/or color and/or other additive, and the poured, packaged, and labeled the product yourself. If 80% or more of your products are “handmade” within this definition, then they qualify for coverage under this policy. What does the product liability insurance coverage cover?
The policy is Commercial General and Product Liability policy. The base limits are:

$1,000,000 Products-Completed Operations Aggregate Limit
$1,000,000 Personal and Advertising Injury Limit
$1,000,000 Each Occurrence Limit
$300,000 Damage to Rented Premises Limit
$5,000 Medical Expense Limit
Business Personal Property coverage covers “miscellaneous property of a floating nature.” This means it covers the type of property you use in your business that is “tangible property you own or is in your care, custody or control.” Example of this type of property are inventory, packaging, and equipment you use in the course of conducting your business. The limits are:

How much does the insurance cost?
When does the insurance coverage expire?
If you have the product liability insurance member benefit, the policy will expire a year from the day you purchase your policy. While Indie Business Network membership and insurance are purchased separately, we encourage you to purchase both on the same date so you do not have to track two renewal dates.
How do I increase coverage from $1,000,000 to $2,000,000?
Can I pay for my insurance in installments?
Is the insurance premium refundable?
If I sell my business, is the policy transferable to the new owner?
No. The new owner would have to procure their own coverage.
Does obtaining this insurance change my Indie Business Network membership dues, or any of my other Indie Business Network member benefits?
No, it simply adds to your benefits.
Is there minimum annual revenue requirement with this insurance?
Is there a maximum annual revenue cap with this insurance?
No, but if this program is significantly insufficient for your commercial manufacturing and/or retail establishment, your premium may be higher.
How do I purchase product liability insurance through this program?
Simply join Indie Business Network as a full or supplier member. After your membership dues are procesed, you will receive a link to the page to secure your insurance. Complete the short form, submit payment, and your new insurance certificate will be emailed to you right away. It's that easy!
When will my insurance become effective?
Immediately upon receipt of payment. You get your insurance certificate right away.
Do I qualify for the insurance if my business is located in a country other than the United States?
Are cosmetic products made for pets e.g. dog or cat soap or shampoo covered?
Yes, if they are handmade by you.
How will I receive my certificate of insurance?
It will be emailed to you immediately after you purchase the policy.
What if I want to include Additional Insureds?
You can simply log into our insurance portal using your username and password and add Additional Insureds at any time on your own and then print out your new certificate. There is no additional charge for this service!
Can I join Indie Business Network and not get the insurance?
Yes, there are three ways you can join Indie Business Network and not purchase insurance through Indie Business Network. First, if you have insurance elsewhere, you can join Indie Business Network and not get insurance through Indie Business Network, and after you join, fax a copy of your insurance certificate to our broker at 801-763-1374. Second, if you are a service provider who does not sell products (consultant, publisher, etc.), you can join Indie Business Network without insurance. Third, if you are not yet actively selling products and want to join Indie Business Network so you can learn what is involved in running a profitable business before you dive in yourself (smart move!), you can be a full Indie Business Network member for two years before having to purchase insurance.
What if I just want the insurance? Do I still have to join Indie Business Network?
The insurance is a benefit of membership in Indie Business Network. Join us, and you'll see that we're much more than an insurance portal!
What if I am already an Indie Business Network member and now wish to add the insurance?
Renew your membership paying the full price, and then continue to purchase your insurance. We will contact you after to prorate the membership dues, and will refund you the different so you don't double pay.
Is product liability insurance included with my Indie Business Network membership?
No. Product liability insurance is a member benefit. Membership in Indie Business Network is $175/year. Insurance is priced separately as described above, depending on whether you purchase $1M or $2M in coverage. Once you join Indie Business Network or renew your membership, paying your membership dues, you will receive a link to get your product liability insurance.
