Our conversation was so much fun that I urge you to head over to iTunes and grab it right now! It's Episode Number 14, labeled “IBP#014” in iTunes.

Episode 14 Show Notes

  1. People are social media. Shama says that the definition of social media is constantly evolving, but at it's core, “people are social media.” Unlike in decades past, each one of us now has the ability to personally impact hundreds of thousands, and even millions of people, in our lifetimes. With this massive power comes great responsibility. We all have access to the same means of communication. How we approach and use social media to leverage that power is up to us as individuals and as a society in general.
  2. Social media marketing is different from traditional marketing. In the past, businesses had to “advertise” their products and services using television, billboards, radio ads, etc. The amazing thing that has changed for business owners is that people are communication back to us, and we can have converations that we never had the opportunity to have before. With social media, you don't have to be a big company with a big bank roll in order to engage your customers and influence them to do busines with you. Social media really levels the playing field across the board, and there's nothing more powerful than that.
  3. How to use social media as a tool. Social media is a great tool to attract people to your brand and give them a first look at what you do. Use it as a tool to attract people back to your website and then convert them into customers. Social media is not a direct sales platform. It's a story telling platform that is a great first door into your business.

Shama and I also incorporate comments and questions from listeners and review more specific ways to use social media, including the notion that you must meet your customers where they are and not where you think they should be. There are so many insightful parts to my chat with Shama, that I can’t list them all here. You definitely want to make sure you get this episode now.
