Chicken Indie Is Not An Option
Yesterday, an opportunity to feature members of the Indie Beauty Network on Indie Business Radio arose at the last minute. While totally unexpected, I thought it was a great chance for Indies to get some free pub. I circulated an email to companies featured in my 2007 Holiday Gift Guide and several Indies who had the time joined me for a fun show.
But one Indie's response to the invitation puzzled me: "I'm too chicken to participate."
I know everyone is different. Some people are naturally shy while others without any media experience are simply nervous. Perhaps even more to the point, I'm the first to admit that my show is no Oprah & Friends. On the other hand, for Indies in need of a sales boost around the holidays, there's nothing to be lost and everything to be gained by taking advantage of a last minute free promotional opportunity.
Take Amanda Kennerly of Just Right Candle Company for example. Amanda joined me and admitted to being very nervous on the show. But she quickly adapted by simply sharing her passion for candles. By the end of her segment, Amanda was breezing through explanations about how wonderful her wickless candles are in great scents like Spruce Christmas Tree (pictured) and Pumpkin Vanilla. Now when another media opportunity comes her way, Amanda will be that much more prepared for it.
Thanks to Amanda and these other Indies for joining me on the show (which will be available for stream and download later this week):
Joanne Bassett of Joanne Bassett Perfume, Palm Springs, CA
Nickie Brown of After The Rayne, Grangerland, TX
If you have an online business, media opportunities large and small will come your way. You will not have time for all of them and sometimes, you just have to say "no." Do that when you must, but don't let being chicken keep you from seizing opportunities to promote your business.
You have to do a lot of things to be successful in business. One of them is to simply answer the door when opportunity knocks.
