Today is Independence Day and, for me, that means fun, family and celebration of the freedom that comes with small business ownership. It also means pondering how challenging it must have been for the people who arrived here from England in search of freedom from the persecution and restrictions that were foisted on them by an unchecked monarchy.
While they didn't create a perfect union, and they made many poor choices along the way, today, we can still benefit from their pioneering spirit by declaring our own brand of independence — I call it “indiependence.” Indiependence is a state of mind that brings about a state of being. Once a person declares his or her indiependence, a whole new world of opportunities opens up.
Today, I share my indiependence with people the world over, most especially with the members of the Indie Beauty Network whom I serve with passion and enthusiasm. Independence Day is the perfect time to salute my members, and the indie spirit worldwide.
As the recession continues for much of the business world at large, Indie Beauty Network members are refusing to participate. Oh sure, we feel the pinch in some ways, but since the kind of liberty we pursue does not require generating exorbitant profits, we do not look to the business world at large for permission to proceed with our dreams.
Instead, we focus on a specific group of customers to whom we deliver specific types of product. We need look no further than them for direction and guidance.
Like the people who arrived centuries ago and called this place, “America,” we pursue a special brand of happiness that results from creating and managing a business that grows as we grow, and serves as we serve.
Happy “Indiependence” Day!
Question: If you have a business, how does it represent “indiependence” to you? If you don't have a business, do you think starting one — even a small one — could enhance your life in any way?
