As you may know, August is one of the most popular vacation months of the year. That's why our focus for this month is Rest and Rejuvenate, and our book is Sacred Rest: Recover Your Life, Renew Your Energy, Restore Your Sanity. In it, author Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, teaches us that it's possible to overcome burnout and cultivate a personal culture of well-being so we can thrive in the midst of family demands, business and career pressures, and the stress of everyday life. We will learn all about it as we read this book together this month.
The book categorizes rest into 7 areas: spiritual, emotional, creative, physical, mental, social, and sensory. The one that interests me the most (at least today) is Emotional Rest. Here's a quote from the book about this type of rest:
Lean into the uncertainty of authenticity. We are created to thrive in connection with others. Who are those people you most feel like yourself around? Open yourself to regular communion with the bread of self-disclosure and the wine of community. In drinking deeply in these rewarding relationships, you will find the strength to risk vulnerability with others.
Sleep and rest are not synonymous.
In starting the book already, I have already learned something I didn't know and that is that sleep is not the same thing as rest. I always thought that if I got enough sleep, I didn't really need to focus much on “rest.” I now know that they are different.
Sleep is a by-product of rest, not the same thing as rest. Rest makes sleep possible. In a nation where nearly 50% self-diagnose some kind of “insomnia,” this is a huge insight. I'm looking forward to learning more as we read this book together next month.
Ready to Start Getting Adequate Rest?
If you are not rested, both you and your business will suffer. Neither can perform well if you are not rested.
August is the second most popular month for vacations in the United States so it's the perfect month for us to focus on the topic — especially before we dive into the busy fall and holiday season.
We'll explore the topic of rest: what it means, how to understand it, and how we can fully embrace and incorporate it into our busy lives so we can benefit as leaders and entrepreneurs. We spend so much time serving others. it's time to take some moments to focus on serving ourselves, don't you think?
