From time to time, we receive inquiries from industry participants who are ready to sell their businesses and move onto their next adventure. Today, I am excited to share that an organic skincare line and business is for sale. It's called Truth®. Let's hear from founder and CEO Maureen Laniak, pictured at top right in the collage below.
dM: What is the history of your business? What is your story?
Maureen:
TRUTH started 10 years ago with a commitment to health and authenticity, and a promise to offer high quality, affordable and organic personal care products to women with the truth that they are indeed “Royal Image Bearers” of the King. Nothing but the very best ingredients and products would do! I created an all-natural signature mineral makeup line from scratch, along with a certified organic skin care line.
I was and continue to be committed to helping women of color have access to makeup products that do not leave them with that awful “ashen” look.
Our line consists of over 100 uniquely formulated products, and all of the formulations are being sold with the brand.
dM: Why are you selling your business and what is the asking price?
Maureen:
I am in full-time ministry and am unable to keep up with the growing demand. Because the business is at a critical moment to scale, I want it to be a blessing to a woman or a group of women who have dreamed about owning their own organic skin care and makeup line, but may not have the desire or the ability to start it from scratch.
Although we have well over 125-150K invested in the business, we are selling it for a very affordable price so that we can bless another woman who is hoping to start her own business without the burden of a lot of startup costs or investment.
I want to give a budding entrepreneur a “leg up” and a HUGE head start in running and owning her own business. It is something I wish someone could have offered me.
We are also open to giving the business to a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that can run with it for the benefit of women who want to exercise their entrepreneurial wings.
This offering includes mentoring by me personally for two months and all the rights/goods, raw material, recipes, packaging, including the website, e-commerce and all trademarks.
It's the opportunity I wish someone had offered to me when I first started out.
dM: What are the best parts about owning and managing your business?
Maureen:
There are so many great things about owning this business. Over the years, I have referred to this business a “bizmistry” because it uniquely combines ministry and business. There is a lot of added value for the customer in this combination. Owning this business has given me the freedom to be creative, to change things, to serve others as a ministry and to be my own boss. What's not to like?!
dM: What will you miss the most?
Maureen:
It's ALWAYS about the people, isn't it?
I will miss my “sister” retail customers and community members. I will also miss the awesome retailers who have regularly purchased from me. I'll miss my suppliers who have so diligently provided us with the ingredients and packaging we have needed through the years.
By the way, all of customer lists and suppliers are being offered for sale along with the brand.
dM: What are the hardest parts about owning and managing your business?
Maureen:
The hardest part of owning and managing a business is that you have to be continuously growing edges to yourself on your entrepreneurial journey. You find out you are better at doing some things than others, and the adjustments as you go can be challenging.
Also, its no surprise that some aspects of entrepreneurship can really energize you while other aspects tire and wear you out.
There are always new challenges, but if you love what you do, you meet these challenges with creativity and positivity! 🙂
dM: What are you actually selling?
Maureen:
I am selling everything that is owned by the company, Truthgirl, Inc. It will be like a “business in a box” for the new owner. Here are some of the assets we are offering for sale with the company:
- The custom website valued at over $13,000: truthgirl.com
- All customer lists
- All formulas
- All inventory, packaging and raw materials
- All graphics, images and marketing collateral
- All custom artwork, some of which is featured this post (much of it created by hand by a local artist), copyrighted materials and trademarks
I will also offer the new owner personal complimentary mentoring and coaching for the first 2 months after purchase!
The new owner will own an entire library of custom proprietary recipes that have been formulated in a lab. These are unique formulations that incorporate only natural and organic ingredients.
We are also offering up the entire warehouse of inventory and supplies. The new owner would not need to buy anything to start! This is a huge bonus and saves literally thousands upon thousands of dollars and human resources. It will be a great competitive edge for the new owners, who will be able to get started selling products right away.
Our website uses the Ecwid e-commerce platform which has a centralized inventory order management system and great customer support.
All intellectual property (trademarks, copyrights, insurance, legal documents DBA etc.) and the custom website will transfer to the new owner.
dM: Are you planning to offer to stay on as a consultant after the sale to help the new owner get up and running?
Maureen:
Yes! I will offer the new owner my personal mentoring and coaching for the first two months at no additional cost.
dM: Does the company have any employees?
Maureen:
Currently, Truth does not have any employees. We did have team members like a marketer and a fulfillment operator and several girls who did home Spa-Dei events– but COVIID-19 changed it all. Right now, I am doing that myself.
