I am constantly amazed at the speed at which technology is advancing today. For many of us, it's both a blessing and curse. A blessing because it allows us to do business at breakneck speed and provides the access we need to spread the word about what we have to offer in a cost effective manner.
A curse because there's just so much of it! Many people are stymied — almost paralyzed — by the sheer volume of it. And one of the things that holds them back is the thought that if they strike out too soon on something new, they won't do it "properly," and will make a big mess.
So what's the solution? It's certainly not avoiding the new technologies. That will only put you further and further behind. No, the solution is simple. I read it the other day on Twitter. It's called "lurk and learn," and it was Twittered by Maria DiMaggio of Green Springs Body Works in Ashland, Oregon. Maria recently joined Twitter and has been enjoying watching what other people are doing.
Like all of us, she could have stayed away because — let's be honest — it is a bit intimidating at first. Kind of like walking into a cocktail party by yourself and suddenly recognizing that you are sadly under-dressed. Thank goodness that with Twitter, you can walk in naked! You can and lurk and learn in the shadows and no one need know anything about it until you're ready to tell.
So don't be afraid to move into the brave new world of online networking and collaboration, and discover the wonderful things it can do for you. And by all means, don't ignore it. Your business depends on it!!
Take it one step at at time. Lurk and learn as Maria says, and then join the party. I can't wait to meet you there!
Question: How did is lurking and learning helping you manage all of the new and exciting technologies so you can maximize them for your business?
