Atlast week's Indie Business Breakfast in Charlotte, North Carolina, our guest speaker was social media expert Jason Keath. Jason said that, when using social media as a business marketing tool, it's critical to set clear goals and implement specific strategies to achieve them.
It could be a full-on campaign aimed at generating lots of sales, or it could be as simple as trying to build your email list. Jason gave the example of something he did at the company he works for, Heels.com, an online retailer of women's shoes. In building out their blog, Jason wanted to invite guest bloggers so he used Twitter to send out a single request for women who might like to blog in exchange for a free pair of shoes now and then. Within just a few days, Jason had signed up 10 bloggers, each of whom contributes at least a few articles each month for the High Heels Blog.
The goal for this campaign was to find other people who would provide content for the blog consistently and inexpensively. The chosen strategy was Twitter, in part because Jason could sent out a short message, and women would then share the opportunity with each other. Even if each blogger blogs only once a week, Jason's employer has tons of fresh content all the time at a blog that women can use to connect around their passion for shoes.
How easy is that? Set a goal, choose a social media tool and then create an effective way to use that tool to achieve the desired result. What business goal can you accomplish using social media this week? Anyone can do this! Why not you!!?
