Because great readers make great business leaders, last year, I launched the INDIE Business Book Club. Our first book club choice was Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?(affiliate link) by Seth Godin. A few months later, it was Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose (affiliate link) by Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh. I am pleased to announce the re-launch of the Indie Business Book Club in a different format for 2011. Our first book is The Compound Effect By Success Magazine publisher Darren Hardy.
You can learn more about the book and purchase it here. More about that below, but first, in case you missed some of the fun of last year's club, check out a few of the updates for Linchpin at the Fan Page here (about throwing yourself under a bus) and here (about the value of emotional labor). As you can see, I posted a quote from the book and shared a few thoughts to get the discussion started, and then participants in the club joined in to share valuable insights and opinions. A few months later, we added Delivering Happiness by Zappos's CEO Tony Hsieh.
If you missed out, you can get updates here (about selling out if you had the chance), here (about shaping your brand story), here (about what poker and managing a business have in common). While those conversation were fun and interesting, they were missing intimate connections and growth opportunities where we gathered at specific times to learn and share ideas, challenge each other to take action, and hold each other accountable.
The new Indie Business Book Club fills that gap by including bi-monthly conference calls and a “buddy system” to ensure that we do more than just read books: we'll actually change our lives together. Here's how it will work:
The Compound Effect has six chapters and we are going to cover them in 5 meetings, held bi-weekly, from January through the first part of March. There will be plenty of time between each meeting, and there will be homework. You'll have the option of buddying up with another person for accountability, to help accelerate progress, and experience more results! Here's our schedule:
January 13 from Noon to 1:30pm EST: Introduction and how the compound effect works for everyone, whether they know it or not.
To prepare, read through the end of Chapter 2, to page 22.
Homework: sign up and choose a buddy (if you'd like one). I will help facilitate buddies for those who request one through the sign-up process.
January 27 from Noon to 1:30pm EST: Making good choices and developing good habits.
To prepare, read through the end of Chapter 4, to page 92.
Do the written homework here, here and here.
February 10 from Noon to 1:30pm EST: Gaining momentum and choosing positive influences.
To prepare, read through the end of Chapter 5, to page 140.
Do the written homework here, here, and here.
February 234 from Noon to 1:30pm EST: Acceleration and the compound effect in action.
To prepare, read through page 158.
Do the written homework here.
March 32 from Noon to 1:30pm2:00pm to 3:00pm EST: Acceleration and the compound effect in action.
To prepare, read through page 158.
Do the written homework here. Then, final wrap-up, check-ins and opportunities for continued accountability.
Read through to the end of the book and review what matters most to you. Come to this final session prepared to share progress and be accountable to your buddy and to the group.
Before during and after our meetings, we will share what we learn via the the Facebook group.
A new book will be selected in February, and we'll start that in March April. The goal will be to not only read the selected books, but to comb through them for nuggets we can use to achieve more and become better leaders in our business and personal lives in 2011. We will select future books together as we move forward.
