Yesterday at my church, I enjoyed a presentation on the importance of consistency when it comes to spiritual things. The teacher said that the reason why some people feel spiritually disconnected is that they are looking to encounter an earth shattering experience — like God speaking audibly or the sky opening up to reveal some fantastic job they are to do — rather than simply being consistently involved in their spiritual experience, little by little, day by day, even when they don't feel like it.
The message hit home for me in many ways. I also noticed an interesting application to the business world. So often, I am asked by new entrepreneurs how to know exactly what they should do to make lead their businesses to success and profitability as soon as possible. The question is often asked in ways that presume there are one or two big things that propel a businesses forward. But the reality is that, it's not the big things that make a business successful. Rather, it's the little things that leaders to consistently, day in and day out, that make their businesses prosper.
Only after you do the million little things you don't feel like doing, consistently and without any fanfare, will your "big breaks" begin to come. Once that happens, we'd much rather hear about the big news than about the tiny little things that were done moment by moment for years to get to that point. But those are indeed the very things that make us successful, both in life and in business.
