Like many American Maker Entrepreneurs, Derek did not start his business “on purpose.” Instead, doing something he loved (making music) led organically to a business opportunity, which led organically to another business opportunity, which eventually led to the 2008 sale of CD Baby for $22 million.
Not surprisingly, Sivers did not start with a fancy business plan. He wasn't “thinking big,” and he wasn't pressed to make a boatload of cash. He just put one step in front of the other in a methodical way. He took things slowly, which ironically resulted in pretty fast progress, an interesting paradox.

Derek Sivers had been a professional musician when he became frustrated that he was unable to sell his music online without the assistance of a traditional record company. To solve this problem, he created the CD Baby website to sell his CDs. His musician friends were intrigued and began asking him to list and sell their music at his website, and the rest is history. CD Baby grew into the largest seller of independent music on the Internet with over $100M in sales representing over 150,000 musicians.
Since selling CD Baby, Derek has traveled the world and nurtured his many creative endeavors. He currently lives in New Zealand. Derek writes regularly on creativity, entrepreneurship, and music at his blog.
